What are my options for dental sedation?

Nitrous Oxide Sedation — Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is a mild sedative that helps patients feel relaxed during dental treatment. It’s inhaled through a small mask and works quickly, with effects wearing off shortly after the mask is removed. Patients remain awake and can return to normal activities the same day.

Oral Conscious Sedation — Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment to help you feel calm and at ease. You’ll remain awake but deeply relaxed, and you may not remember much of the procedure. Because the effects take time to wear off, someone will need to drive you home afterward.

Does dental sedation have side effects?

Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are generally safe, but mild side effects can occur. With nitrous oxide, some patients may feel lightheaded or experience mild nausea, which usually goes away quickly. Oral conscious sedation can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, or temporary memory loss. These effects are usually short-term. We’ll review your sedation options with you and explain what to expect so you can feel confident and prepared for your visit.

Is dental sedation safe?

Sedation dentistry is considered very safe when administered by trained professionals. Before recommending sedation, we review your medical history, current medications, and any health concerns to ensure it’s appropriate for you. Throughout your procedure, our team closely monitors your vital signs to keep you comfortable and safe. Whether you choose nitrous oxide or oral sedation, our goal is to provide a calm, stress-free experience while protecting your health.

Which one is right for me, nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation?

The right type of sedation depends on your comfort level, medical history, and the type of treatment you need. Nitrous oxide is ideal for mild anxiety and shorter procedures—it works quickly and wears off fast. Oral conscious sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation and may be better for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or longer appointments. We’ll help you decide which option is best during your consultation.
